Does Plastic Surgery Really Improve Body Image?

Before you get a cosmetic surgery procedure performed, it makes sense that you would wonder if it will really improve your body image and your self-esteem. The Aesthetic Surgery Education and Research Foundation wondered the very same thing. They were able to conduct a study to answer this important question.

The researchers found that patients were not only satisfied with their surgery, but also experienced a decrease in the frequency of negative body image emotions in specific social situations for as long as 12 months after surgery. The study was funded by a research grant from ASERF. Results of the study were published in the May/June issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal (ASJ).

The choice to have cosmetic surgery is still a difficult one. Yet, with studies showing that patients really did have an increased body image, the benefits to surgery are more persuasive. If you've always wanted to change aspects of your body, talk to a qualified cosmetic surgeon like David A. Bottger, M.D. in the Philadelphia-Reading-Lehigh Valley to perform your procedure. Plastic Surgery Popular with Teens

More plastic surgery clients then ever before are teens. In fact, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported a twenty percent increase in the number of cosmetic surgery procedures performed on teenagers between the years 2000 and 2004. The cosmetic surgery community is meeting the new statistics with mixed feelings.

Many aesthetic surgeons are pleased with the new results. Why should teenagers live with bodies that they are unhappy with? The sooner a patient has a body that they like, the sooner they can increase their self-esteem and self-image.

Others, however, believe that teens should wait before getting a cosmetic procedure done. Many teens are in an experimental phase where they are willing to change the appearance of their bodies without really wanting a cosmetic surgery procedure. Other teens are turning to dangerous methods in an attempt to improve their physical appearance. The number of teens who frequent illegal laser treatment centers is high. These centers offer cheap laser hair removal or skin resurfacing procedures with unsafe lasers and unqualified people. Fortunately for these teens, there are approved lasers and hair-removal techniques that many plastic surgeons, like Scott A. Greenberg, MD, FACS in Orlando, FL offer. Whether or not plastic surgery should be offered to teens is a matter of opinion. Whatever the view however, the cosmetic surgery community must face the growing demand for plastic surgery among teenage patients.

Show Off That New Look

For everyone who has had cosmetic surgery and wants to show off his or her improved look, there is an innovative, new option. In June this year, the nation's first cosmetic surgery fashion show and beauty expo took place. People who underwent cosmetic surgery were able to show off their bodies as they modeled clothes for some of the hottest designers of the summer. Cosmetic surgeons were also at the expo, explaining and highlighting the latest, state-of-the-art options in the field of cosmetic surgery.

This new way of celebrating cosmetic surgery is an excellent idea. Surgeons that have developed new techniques can share them with the public. People who have had a cosmetic surgery procedure can show off their bodies and the results of their surgeries. Members of the public are presented with a balanced view of cosmetic surgery in a festive light. As Upstate Plastic Surgery in New York knows, with today's advanced cosmetic surgery techniques and procedures, it's never been easier to create the results you've always wanted. An expo is a great way to spread this thinking to the public.
