Botox and Wound Healing

One of the biggest concerns with facial injuries and facial surgery is scarring. We have known for years that tension on a healing wound will cause a more prominent scar by constantly pulling the wound apart as it heals. Preventing tension on a facial wound can be very difficult, but now it looks like we may a very simple solution.

BOTOX injections are currently used to reduce wrinkles. They work by relaxing the muscles used when making facial expressions and crinkling the skin. In a recent study, doctors tried using BOTOX injections when closing forehead wounds, to see if relaxing the muscles that would normally pull on the wounds would improve healing. 31 patients were involved, some received BOTOX and others were injected with saline. Six months later those who had received BOTOX had significantly better looking results than those who did not.

Radiofrequency May Replace BOTOX

BOTOX cosmetic is a very popular wrinkle treatment that works by stopping the nerve impulses that make muscles contract, thereby relaxing the muscles that cause winkles such as frown lines. The injections take several days to take effect, and they wear off in about three to five months. Repeat treatments tend to have longer lasting results, but are still temporary.

New technology is under development which would use radiofrequencies to locate and destroy the specific nerves which cause the unwanted muscle contractions, with potentially long-lasting or even permanent, results. The procedure would require local anesthesia. Even if the treatment does replace BOTOX for wrinkle treatment, don't expect to see BOTOX go away anytime soon. Other medical uses for the cosmetic injections are on the horizon.
