Allergan to Launch Latisse Eyelash Enhancer

Allergan, the maker of Botox, is about to launch their next facial wonder product. The product, called Latisse, is an eyelash enhancer designed to give you longer, thicker, darker, eye lashes. The product should be available by prescription from your local cosmetic surgeon in early 2009.

Allergan received FDA approval for Latisse in December 2008, making it the first prescription medication on the market used for treating hypotrichosis of the eyelashes. The main chemical component in Latisse is bimatoprost, which has been used for several years in the drug Lumigan to treat glaucoma patients. Doctors noticed that an unintended side effect of bimatoprost was an increase in eyelash growth. Allergan has repackaged the substance in a less potent dosage to give you Latisse.

Latisse works by keeping your hair in its growth cycle for a longer period of time, resulting in more lush eyelashes. In order to maintain the results of your treatment, you must continue taking Latisse. Once you stop, your eyelashes will return to their normal length.

A thin layer of Latisse is applied to the edge of your eyelid once a day. The cost for Latisse is $120 for a one-month supply.
